British Foreign Office has placed eleven new nations to its official warning list about the threats of toxic alcohol poisoning from adulterated alcoholic drinks.

The expanded travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the incidence of reported cases" of industrial alcohol toxicity.

Just last month, officials had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, following multiple serious incidents like the tragic loss of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being advised that even small amounts of industrial alcohol can cause vision loss or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

What is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Used?

Methanol is a toxic substance often employed in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. This substance is not meant for human consumption.

Although it is generated during the manufacture of spirits, reputable manufacturers bring it down to low, safe levels for ingestion through the purification method.

However in some countries, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to reduce expenses, and because it is flavorless and odourless, it is impossible to identify.

Government Recommendations for Travellers

Authorities minister the minister said that each tourist should recognize the symptoms of toxic alcohol contamination.

"When you are having drinks in foreign countries, choose reputable establishments and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," the minister warned.

"In case something appears suspicious, for example a fatigue that's much more severe than normal or sight issues – seek medical attention immediately."

The full register of countries listed as presenting a danger of methanol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
