2026 Dubbed the Age of the Amphibian Adventure.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Given that a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Frogs are not at all new to the gaming landscape. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. However, their popularity has markedly exploded in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are bona fide titles centered on frogs.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this rise, I undertook a deep dive into the recent history of hoppy gaming on Steam. My approach was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The data reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's elevated place in the public consciousness is also visible elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. But, the wave in gaming looks uniquely pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Frankly, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs possess built-in appealing traits for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities lend themselves to a myriad of unique mechanics.

Many of the showcased games directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year yet.

If these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be entering a genuine croaking cultural moment.
